Novelist and playwright Edie Claire is a veterinarian, a childbirth educator, and a mother of three who delights in writing cozy mysteries, classic and young adult romantic suspense novels, and comedic stage plays. Pick up an Edie Claire book and you can be assured of intrigue, humor, a touch of romance (or a hefty dose of it, depending on the book!) and an ending that will leave you with a smile. Edie has also written the Leigh Koslow mystery series, a YA romance entitled Wraith, and two stage plays (with Samuel French). The part we don't understand is where Edie gets the time and energy to do all this work! But we thank her for doing so!

It is not an easy task to go through all of Edie's work and select feature volumes. However, we've decided to highlight three romances which Edie describes as “classic romantic suspense,” because rather than being dark and high stakes, they are a blend of mystery with heartwarming romance.

The romances are nonexplicit and the suspense plots have a gothic feel, although they are all contemporary in setting. One of the three we're featuring here is a ghost story. The first two books in the set were originally published with Warner Forever in 2003 and 2004, and were both Romantic Times 4.5-star Top Picks. These days, Edie publishes all her books independently, both in ebook and print.

Edie Claire put her experience as a small animal veterinarian to use when writing her humorous series of mysteries starring hapless advertising copywriter Leigh Koslow (originally published by Signet/NAL). But when writing the parts where Leigh falls in love with an old friend, Edie realized how much she longed to write a romance. So she combined her veterinary background, a fictionalized version of her small hometown in Kentucky, and her fascination with ghost stories (thank you, Barbara Michaels!) to write her first “classic” romantic suspense: Long Time Coming.

Further Explorations, by David Russell, takes up where the first book, Explorations, left off. Janice and Cedric, who are recently divorced, have enjoyed their passionate interlude. They have experienced a rejuvenation of spirit but both are still striving for that transformation of self; to shed the constraints of their old lives and become the person each secretly desires to be. Their interlude was just the beginning of that transformation and although there are some misgivings and reluctance they agree to go their separate ways to experience all that life has to offer.

David Russell doesn’t hold back in Further Explorations. I enjoyed reading about Cedric and Janice. They share so many of the same qualities, thoughts and experiences. Reading about characters with a lot in common was a breath of fresh air, as most wo/man pairs are drawn together by their differences, opposites attract and all. Cedric and Janice, on the other hand, are drawn together as if they are one being no matter how much physical distance is between them.

Further Explorations is a great read because David really focuses on getting into the character’s mind. This novel does a great job communicating the experiences of Janice and Cedric, and pulling your mind into their connection. David’s descriptive writing is rich and any woman who loves a slow burning read will enjoy Further Explorations.
