Julie couldn’t believe the audacity. First, he’d touched her person, groping her most inappropriately when he’d caught her in his strong arms. Then he’d attempted to purchase not only her, but also her horse. “Just who do you think you are?” she asked, punching her hands into her hips. Then she turned and took the horse’s lead from the stable hand. She walked it toward the barn. The unlikely pair followed.
“Your savior,” the blonde one murmured to her.
“If you’ll allow it,” the brown haired one intoned just as quietly. “It’s up to you, Miss Murrell. She just tried to sell you. And I bought.” He stopped for a moment. Then he said, “I bought the horse, and we’re inviting you to come with it.”
“Beg your pardon?” she asked. Somehow, they’d gotten the horse between her and her family. So, the three of them stood relatively alone. “I don’t even know you.”
“I’ve always wanted a horse like this,” the dark one said. He nodded toward the blond man, who wore a cheeky grin all his own. “And he’s always wanted a chit in breeches.”

Her eyes widened for a hint of a second, then she moved to the edge of the bed, blew out the candle, and began to unbutton her gown.
"I want the candle lighted," he said harshly. "I am your husband, and I want to see what I'm getting." He scooped up the candle, strolled to the fireplace, and relit the wick from the flames. Walking slowly back to her bed, he watched her lift the gown over her head, then clutch the coverlet to hide her breasts, her face flaming.
He set the candle on the marble top of her bedside table and leaned over her, lifting her chin with his finger. "I cannot believe the former Miss De Mouchet blushes over the prospect of displaying her lovely body."
"It is just. . ." Anna whispered, "I did not know this act was performed . . .without clothing?"
His laughter shook the room. "Yes, my dear, we shall perform the act totally naked. I pity your former lovers if they were denied the pleasure of your entire body." Max tried to lean away from him so he couldn't feel her heart pounding a crazy beat under her ribs. Her entire body had turned traitor. How could her hormones go into overdrive for the guy who'd just drugged and abducted her? It wasn’t fair. She looked at the floor, praying the blush incinerating her cheeks wouldn't betray her.
No hope. He caught her chin in one hand and forced her to look into his. For an instant, she thought she saw a spark of amusement there, before he narrowed his gaze to grey slits.
"On your knees, Maxine Rosalie Foss," he ordered.
Kneel? But that would put her at eye level with his... What did he want her to do?

She tried not to think about that, either.
He took his time stepping back, drawing out her mortification as long as possible. Before she could stand again, he planted a leather boot on the chain of the cuffs. She couldn’t misread the message. He had all the power. She could submit, or suffer.
On instinct, she looked up to see pitiless grey eyes smoldering at her. "Are you certain you will never apologize to me, Max?"
