Edie Claire

Author & Playwright Edie Claire
Novelist and playwright Edie Claire is a veterinarian, a childbirth educator, and a mother of three who delights in writing cozy mysteries, classic and young adult romantic suspense novels, and comedic stage plays. Pick up an Edie Claire book and you can be assured of intrigue, humor, a touch of romance (or a hefty dose of it, depending on the book!) and an ending that will leave you with a smile. Edie has also written the Leigh Koslow mystery series, a YA romance entitled Wraith, and two stage plays (with Samuel French). The part we don't understand is where Edie gets the time and energy to do all this work! But we thank her for doing so!
It is not an easy task to go through all of Edie's work and select feature volumes. However, we've decided to highlight three romances which Edie describes as “classic romantic suspense,” because rather than being dark and high stakes, they are a blend of mystery with heartwarming romance.
The romances are nonexplicit and the suspense plots have a gothic feel, although they are all contemporary in setting. One of the three we're featuring here is a ghost story. The first two books in the set were originally published with Warner Forever in 2003 and 2004, and were both Romantic Times 4.5-star Top Picks. These days, Edie publishes all her books independently, both in ebook and print.
Edie loves to connect with her readers. Why don't you drop her a line at edieclaire@juno.com, or follow Edie on Facebook or Twitter.
Edie Claire put her experience as a small animal veterinarian to use when writing her humorous series of mysteries starring hapless advertising copywriter Leigh Koslow (originally published by Signet/NAL). But when writing the parts where Leigh falls in love with an old friend, Edie realized how much she longed to write a romance. So she combined her veterinary background, a fictionalized version of her small hometown in Kentucky, and her fascination with ghost stories (thank you, Barbara Michaels!) to write her first “classic” romantic suspense: Long Time Coming.
Why “classic?” Because while today’s romantic suspense tends to be darker and grittier, Edie’s own tastes harken back to the more psychological and/or gothic suspense of Mary Stewart and Victoria Holt. In her own books, she strives for a unique blend of intriguing mystery and heartwarming romance, with just a touch of humor thrown in (because she really can’t help herself!).
In Meant to Be, an adoptee’s search for answers about her birthparents leads her to a historic stone mansion in the Laurel Mountains of Pennsylvania—and a little more unvarnished truth than she was hoping for.
Borrowed Time is the story of a woman who, after a decade of running from her own past, is suddenly forced to face the reality of what happened on one dark, horrific night when she was seventeen.
And because Edie still hasn’t gotten over that ghost fascination, her first YA romance, Wraith, is a supernatural tale of love and shadows set on the hauntingly beautiful North Shore of Oahu.

The Woman in White (Oxford World's Classics)The Woman in White (1859-60) is the first and greatest `Sensation Novel'. Walter Hartright's mysterious midnight encounter with the woman in white draws him into a vortex of crime, poison, kidnapping, and international intrigue. The novel is dominated by two of the finest creations in all Victorian fiction - Marion Halcombe, dark, mannish, yet irresistibly fascinating, and Count Fosco, the sinister and flamboyant `Napoleon of Crime'. A masterwork of intricate construction, The Woman in White sets new standards of suspense and excitement, and achieved sales which topped even those of Dickens, Collins's friend and mentor.
Playing Love's Odds (A Classic Sexy Romantic Suspense)It was not the sort of investigation Logan Burke usually handled. Nowadays he was hired by your average Joe - not sleek, polished corporate players in plush Houston office suites. But it was a straightforward case of industrial espionage with one advantage - a hefty check from ViOPet Chemical Company. All Logan had to do was watch Hannah Evans, a ViOPet employee, and figure out how she was leaking valuable research secrets. In the six weeks that he spent watching her, Logan began to feel a special bond with Hannah. For the first time in years, he actually considered dumping the case and pursuing the mark. It was not enough to view Hannah across a crowded restaurant or through the lens of a camera. He wanted to breathe her scent. He wanted to hear her voice. He wanted to find the innocence he'd given up on finding in his life again.
Hannah knew someone was following her. She didn't know who he was or why he was there, but his presence was unnerving. It was time to take action, time to let a professional call the shots. She would pay a visit to a private investigator who had come highly recommended - a Mr. Logan Burke.

"Weir's (Long Night Moon) latest contemporary romance is a subtle yet shattering bucolic love poem of the American heartland. Lark Leopold, a sheltered young woman bearing the secret of painful sexual wounds, travels to Iowa to conduct a study on ""the contentment of cows."" She is attracted to a farmer, Nathan Senatra, but upon discovering his ex-wife floating face down in a cow pond, she suspects Nathan of the murder. But the murder plot is overshadowed by Nathan's and Lark's romantic torment as each has been wounded in ways that make love well-nigh impossible. Weir isn't maudlin, but rather endows her characters with a warm wit--and the ultimate resolution of their obstacles is an affirmation to the weariest reader." Publishers Weekly 04/28/1997

Striking out on her own for the first time, Lark Leopold comes face-to-face with the steamy glare was of an impossibly rugged and handsome farmer.
Nathan Senatra's life is a mess and he doesn't have time for Lark's silly, bureaucratic, animal research. His wife has left him and taken almost everything he has. When her body is found in the pond behind his house, Nathan is the prime suspect. But are the cops focusing on the wrong person while a killer stalks the small community of Elizabeth, Iowa? Or is Nathan really capable of murder?
This book was originally published in 1997, and is typical of romances written in that time period. It contains the dangerous Alpha male paired with the naive female who instinctively trusts him even though outwardly he seems to be everything she should avoid. We have high drama and exaggerated reactions, we have tender love, and, like all good stories, a bit of truth.
